Terminal Server on VMWare constantly needs a restart

We have a Windows Server 2012 terminal server VM on an ESXi Server. Every so often it hangs up and keeps people from login in. RDP clients will hang up at "Preparing Destination Computer". Then I have to reboot the server, kicking out the users that are logged in, just to get it back to accepting RDP sessions again.

I've tried to dig into logs and I can only find a one thing that seemed weird. The Terminal Services Local Session Manager logs have an error stating:

Attempt to send disconnect message to Windows video subsystem failed. The relevant status code was 0x80070102.

I don't know if this is relevant. It doesn't seem to be. I decided to update VMWare tools to the latest version to update the VMware video driver. Still no luck. This is an intermittent issue that sometimes happens once a month and sometimes twice a day.

IE Proxy + RD Gateway Issue

Hello,

I have a question about something that has been bugging me.

I have two devices: 1 Desktop, 1 Laptop.

OS: Windows 10 LTSB (both).

Everything is the same besides the obvious hardware difference.

They are on a domain, with GPO's, which are the same for both devices.

They both have a saved Remote Desktop Icon that connects to a server which uses a RD gateway.

For some reason, when the IE Connections Lan Settings - Proxy Configuration* is active on the laptop I cannot connect to the Remote Desktop Server (that uses a RD Gateway). Yet on the desktop it functions without issues.

PS By not connecting I mean it brings up the authentication pop up, but it says logon failed, if I disable the proxy settings in IE i suddenly am able to authenticate and it loads the remote server connection.

Why is this happening?

Windows Server 2016 Remote Desktop User CALS are installed but not being isssued

My server continues to say 'remote desktop licensing mode is not configured.  remote desktop service will stop working in x days.' when it starts up.  I just want it to be a regular old per user session host.

- The server is a newly installed server (2016 Std) in a simple domain and licensed fine.

- The remote desktop user CALs were purchased from VLSC and installed fine

- Everything is GREEN in RD Licensing manager showing available 'per user' licenses (none issued)

- The server is configured 'per user' and the Overview page doesn't show any problems or + signs or anything.

Windows 10 RDC Taskbar Transposed over Terminal Server Session Taskbar

This week I have had fun with a client whose Windows 10 session task bar is being transposed over the top of the RDC terminal server session task bar.

Anyone else hit this?

Only way to swap between them is by pressing the 'start button' on the keyboard. The  'start button' on the task bar does nothing.

Remote desktop gateway and Best Pratice Analyser!

Hi,

I have just implemented a new hosting solution for our customers and it seems to work just as it should.

Anyway when I run BPA on the Remote Desktop Gateway it states that the gateway can't communicate with an ADDS Server.

I can resolve all ADDS servers FQDN on all 3 domains, one domainis an external domain where there is a two way trust.

I can connect to all 3 domains from the server usingActive Directory Users and Computers management console with out any issues.

Tested telnet to all ADDS servers with no problem on port 389 using their FQDN e.g. telnet FQDN 389

Do any one have any ideer of why the BPA is stating that the gateway cant connect to ADDS servers when all test from the server is completed with out issues?

An authorization policy on the Remote Desktop Gateway (RD Gateway) server is configured to use an...

Best Practice for Thin Clients

Hello!

I was hoping you guys could help me out. I'm trying to figure out what the best practice is for how to setup thin clients. Currently, we have around 15 users using NComputing L300 thin clients to remote into a server 2008 VM we have setup on a SCALE cluster (they are all standard users, no admin privileges, just in case you were worried)

Now that Server 2016 was out I want to redo how we have our server setup. So here's what I'd like to do:

1. Setup Server 2016 VM

2. Install Hyper-V, setup VMs users will remote into using L300s (Windows 10?, what would you install here?)

Is this the correct way to do this? Or, am I totally missing the mark? Is it okay that users remote into Server 2016, even if they don't need any of the actual server features?

Thanks for the help!

RDS Question - CALS needed?

We purchased Windows 7 Pro and installed it as a virtual with plans to have remote access (RDP) access to this workstation.  Because we purchased a full version of Windows 7 Pro do we need to also purchase RDS licenses for any user that plans to connect to this virtual workstation or does it depend on the connecting users Windows license?  This is very confusing so we just want to make sure we stay in compliance before we roll too many of these out.

RemoteApp requires RDP port 3389 to stay open?

Hello everyone,

Little rusty on RDS deployment so forgive the newbie question.

Win 2012 R2 = (RD Web + Broker+ Gateway) = all in one box for a small client for a remote desktop

1. Firewall has open port 443 = all good, external DNS A record WAN IP points tohttps://remote.site.com/RDwebchecks out and the only Published RemoteApp is "RemoteDesktop" with parameters of "/v:remote.site.com" for convenience of grabbing RDS config. not really looking to publish remote apps

2. Port 3391 is open and RD Gateway deployed with settings:

-Server: "remote.site.com"

-Log On Method: "Password Authentication"

-[x] Use RD Gateway Credentials for Remote Computers

-[x] Bypass RD Gateway server for local address

- *SSL cert is self signed for now

3. PROBLEM: If we close the Port 3389 on the firewall we can't connect...and we really don't want to advertise port 3389....

RDP "An internal error has occured"

Hi there,

I am having difficulty accessing servers via RDP. I get a message saying An internal error has occurred on some servers I am trying to access. Funnily enough these servers are on a different VLAN to what I am on. Servers on the same LAN as me can be accessed fine.

I was accessing these server yesterday absolutely fine. Suddenly today I get this error. Servers on the same LAN as me I can RDP to... Servers on another VLAN, I cannot. Nothing has changed as far as firewall configs or anything else and I can see that port 3389 is open and working when I try to initiate a session but I then get the error message.

CONFUSED!! Any help is appreciated or areas to troubleshoot as I am now stuck.

Running Win 10, trying to access Server 2012 R2 and 2008 R2 servers. Using a Sophos UTM 9. My LAN is a 192.168.x.0/24, the servers I can't access...

I have a user that works on a laptop.  When he is in his remote office he connects via VPN and then remote desktop without any issues.  When he goes home he can connect via the VPN, but then gets the pop up saying his computer may not be turn on ....  The computer he's connecting to is a remote server and others are connected to it at the same time he is trying to connect.  I sent him home with another laptop to try and he gets the same error.  Not sure why he can connect at his office, but not at home.

Server 2012R2 RemoteApp System rejecting connections from a 2003R2 Client

Hey everyone,

Hopefully this one is a quick question to answer. In short I have a 2012R2 platform across the board with a remoteApp component served through an RDGW. I've trawled the internet for anyone with this situation but I imagine given the fact that 2003R2 is deprecated it would be a rare instance indeed where someone may see this.

Connection to my RD gateway from outside the network is fine for all OSs my clients use, apps launch and the world is good and full of butterflies. I have a second gateway on standby and need to fail over to it from the primary, however when I do that everything works EXCEPT incoming connections from a client still running 2003R2!(Windows 8.1 or 10 for example continue towork with the new GW perfectly). The 2003R2 peoplecan log into the RDWeb, authenticate, are presented with their remoteApps and when...

Hello,

Does anyone know if the known issue in the August and September rollup regarding RDS is fixed yet? The notice has not been updated since Sept. 27th and the new October updates don't seem to mention anything about it.

building new RDS server

I have a client with 15- 20 active RDS sessions all day. I checked the Resource monitor and the issue with the current server is the Disc array. Current Server Server 2008 R2 32 GB RAM, ZEON processor dual core 4 threads... I need input on specifically this: Is server 2012 or Server 2016 better for speedy RDS environment? The users all connect with HP Thin Clients. There is no AD to slow the server as there no need for it, Currently Firefox, chrome, etc, page loads are super slow. This is a vet clinic so it one application (Avimark) plus word and acrobat are open all the time. I have had good experience with Server 2012 and i am comfortable with it; And I know that there have been improvements in the handling of RDS in Server 2012 over 2008 R2.

thanks in advance

Hi All,

Been a while since I deployed this and running into an issue, feels like missing one step but with so much documentation out there not sure where to start.

scenario:
Lab environment, single machine running Broker, Rd gateway, RD web access and session Host.  Machine is on domain with self signed certificate.

When accessing internal RD web access works fine i can open up applications. When i access it externally i am able to sign in and view app collection.  When i click on the app instead of opening up it downloads the RDP file.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Alex

Terminal Servers by Department

$

We are migrating from 2008 r2 terminal servers to server 2012 r2 terminal servers soon. We are currently using a dns round robin to manage load balancing, however we were thinking about separating terminal servers by department, however we still want to have the redundancy factor built in. Is there a way that we can set priority on servers in a dns round robin to prefer a security group to particular server if it is available? I did not have any luck finding this online, any links or documentation that could be sent to me would also be great.

I'd rather not have two separate icons pointing to a primary server and then the general DNS round robin icon because we will always have those few users that click on the round robin icon.

RDS Printing Stops Working for Random Users

Hi All,

So we have a small farm of Server 2012R2 boxes that provide our RDS platform. When we first had it running there was a handful of users who kept having an intermittent printing problem where, out of no where, they would submit the print and it would look like it had gone through, but no print was there.

We use a 'Follow Me' system so the user prints to this Follow Me device and can then swipe their ID card at any printer and select what to print out at that printer, which are all the same model of Ricoh. We had the supplier take a look at it when there were more users getting the problem and they changed the driver, etc and it settled down for a while.

Now we only get one or two users at a time that it happens to and it may only happen once or two and then be fine for a while.

The only fix I've found so far is to remove the printer...

Remote Desktop Services "Remote Control" not working for one user?

We run a Citrix XenApp environment with multiple users set up to shadow others through a group policy. We recently had one employee say that whenever he tries to shadow another, he gets an "Access Denied" error message. I double checked and tested the server he was on, server he was trying to shadow to on a profile with identical permissions and didn't get the error. I tried to shadow his session and it won't allow me to do that. He has been able to shadow in the past and said this just started recently this week. He is using a Surface Pro that is docked. Anyone have any ideas?

Terminal server stops allowing logins

I have few terminal server that will all of a sudden stop allowing people to login. This is happening on both 2008 R2 and 2012 R2 servers. These are all VMs running on vmware. We have Webroot installed for antivirus on both of these. When this happens we cannot even log into the server from the vm console. We have to power down the server and power it back up. I am not seeing anything in the even logs that is jumping out as to a cause. Is there any logging i can turn on to try and track this down?

Remote Desktop while leaving PC Unlocked with Monitor Working?

$

We just set up a powerpoint pc at one of our locations, and just ran into an issue with it.

The plan is for it to display powerpoints on a TV screen in one of our hallways. This PC would be in an open office where anyone could mess around with it if the keyboard, and mouse were to be left out in the open.

We were hoping to be able to remote desktop into this pc, then start the powerpoint, and then leave it. However Windows remote desktop locks the local monitor of the computer, so then our powerpoints do not show.

Is there anyway to use this without the screen locking up? Or can anyone recommend free software that would achieve our vision?

Thank you
